The Council appreciates how older people value and contribute to local communities, and prefer to stay in a familiar area if they ever need specialist housing. Our updated Older People’s Housing Programme is designed to suit our ageing population and respond to a changing financial climate.
The programme includes recent complete refurbishment of over 450 homes. We plan to upgrade Macintosh Court (Streatham) and Queenswood Court (Gipsy Hill) with the same new kitchens, windows and walk-in showers.
We’re also developing new ‘extra care’ places for rent or shared ownership. They offer homes designed especially for older people to live independently, with discreet on-site care and support services if needed. Cheviot Gardens, our newest extra care housing scheme (developed in partnership with Notting Hill Housing) opened in June 2016. Bankhouse, on Albert Embankment, opens in early 2017. Another extra care housing scheme is planned for Somerleyton Road.
